Hamilton as Hermes? - Percy Jackson and the Olympians Episode 7 Review

With the scene in the original film being something of an early 2000s icon, viewers of the new Percy Jackson series on Disney plus anticipated this weeks episode, taking place in the Lotus Casino, very highly. Being a tween around the time the first movie came out, I remember the Lotus Casino scene vividly. The characters eating delicious looking flower cookies while letting loose in a Vegas Casino, meanwhile Lady Gaga’s hit song “Poker Face” played in the background. While it seemed like the height of cool back then, the scene seems hilariously outdated now, so I was as excited as everyone else to see what the modern interpretation of the Casino would look like. And more importantly, would they still include Poker Face? With the airing of episode 7, I was surprised by how different the interpretation was, not just from the first movie, but from the books too. While the rest of the show has stayed pretty consistent to the books, this episode strayed the furthest of any episode so ...

Barbie Snubbed Again? - 2024 Oscar Nominations Review

With the Oscars, the most anticipated awards show of the year, just around the corners nominations were finally released this past week, garnering mixed reviews from fans. While there is much to be celebrated with these Oscar nominations, including the first Native American woman to ever be nominated by the academy, many fans of Barbie are upset by the film’s lack of key nomination. While it’s true that the film itself was nominated for best picture, its titular actress, Margot Robbie, was not nominated for best actress. Additionally its director, Great Gerwig, was not nominated for her role in making the film. However, Ryan Gosling, who played the comedic supporting role of Ken in the film, was nominated as best supporting actor for his role. Many fans of the movie are outraged by these choice of nominations. With the film’s message being one of feminism and woman empowerment, it seems counter intuitive for its male supporting lead to be nominated over its female lead. Many point...

So Fetch or So Cringe? - Mean Girls (2024) Review

With the Barbie Movie and Taylor Swift’s Era Tours dominating public interest over the course of 2023, it’s safe to say that all things Girl and pink are on trend for 2024. So, it’s no surprise that one of the most iconic “Girl Movies” of the early 2000s, Mean Girls  would get itself a musical retelling during this year. However, with the original film being so beloved, does the remake hold up by comparison? And many fans are asking, was it necessary in the first place? I saw Mean Girls (2024) in theaters this week, and my honest thoughts are as follows: this remake was not necessary, but it certainly is fun. I have been a fan of the Mean Girls Musical since before I had seen the film it was based on. I adored the soundtrack, the costumes, the choreography, and was even able to witness it live on tour. I felt it elevated what was so beloved in the original film to new heights, keeping the original humor while updating it slightly for its time. I especially loved the Broadway ...

Award Show Season Begins - Thoughts on the 2023 Golden Globes & Emmy Awards

Award show season kicks off this January with the annual Golden Globes and Emmy Awards shows. 2023 was a record breaking year in the box office for Movies and Television alike, with up and coming directors and seasoned award winners both taking to the big screen. Audiences were eager to see who would ultimately be named award winners at both shows, myself included.  I sat down and watched both the Golden Globes and the Emmy’s in their entirety, and despite many of the awards overlapping between the shows, their presentation couldn’t have been more different. It seems something always goes wrong at these awards shows and becomes an internet sensation, and this year was no different. As I watched the Golden Globes, I couldn’t help but cringe at the awkward, uncomfortable atmosphere the host brought to the show. It was difficult to tell when certain statements were meant to be jokes or when they were meat to be taken seriously, and thus, it felt strange to watch this room full of cele...

Is it for Art or for Shock? - Saltburn Review

After its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in August, critics and casual movie goers alike were excited for Saltburn’ s wide release for the 2023 Holiday season. However, many did not anticipate the film’s graphic content, with a few of its scenes become notorious on social media platforms for their shocking content soon after its release. Viewers argued as to whether such scenes were necessary for the story, and some were purely grossed out by the content. Thus it comes down to the question of whether the movie works as a whole, or if the graphic content distracts from the message of the film. I went into my viewing of Saltburn blind, not knowing any aspects of the story nor about the infamous scenes making their way around social media. Immediately I found myself drawn into the film’s rich environments and mysterious characters as it began to tell a familiar story of unlikely friendship in an artfully shot way. Beautiful lighting and color grading gave the film that feeling o...

The Best Episode So Far? - Percy Jackson and the Olympians Episode 5 Review

On every Tuesday night for the past five weeks, I have waited excitedly for the new episode of Disney's latest TV show adaption, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Long-time fans of the hit book series by Rick Riordan showed enthusiastic support for the first episodes of the series, praising the book-accurate depiction of events and the young actor's portrayals of their beloved characters.  However, as excited as I have been for the series, and as much as I have enjoyed it thus far, I have to admit I was a bit put off by the first few episodes. To me, much of the dialogue felt extremely stiff and purely expositional, and the pacing especially left too much time for dull moments and not enough for dramatic and emotional beats. Simply put, I could not feel the peril of Percy Jackson's situation.  However, this week's episode, "A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers," has proved to me that the series will only improve from its rocky first episodes. Not only did this week'...
